چکیده

Since the last decade, research activities in the area of nano-materials have been increased dramatically. More than a 1000 of journal articles in this area have been published within the last 3 years. Materials scientists and researchers have realized that the mechanical properties of materials can be altered at the fundamental level, i.e. the atomic-scale. Carbon nanotubes (hereafter called ‘nanotubes’) have been well recognized as nanostructural materials that can be used to alter mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of polymer-based composite materials, because of their superior properties and perfect atom arrangement. In general, scientific research related to the nanotubes and their co-related polymer based composites can be distinguished into four particular scopes: (i) production of high purity and controllable nanotubes, in terms of their size, length and chiral arrangement; (ii) enhancement of interfacial bonding strength between the nanotubes and their surrounding matrix; (iii) control of the dispersion properties and alignment of the nanotubes in nanotube/polymer composites and (iv) applications of the nanotubes in real life. Although, so many remarkable results in the above items have been obtained recently, no concluding results have so far been finalized. In this paper, a critical review on recent research related to nanotube/polymer composites is given. Newly-adopted coiled nanotubes used to enhance the interfacial bonding strength of nanocomposites are also discussed. Moreover, the growth of nanotubes from nanoclay substrates to form exfoliated nanotube/nanoclay polymer composites is also introduced in detail. q 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A brief review on the influences of nanotubes' entanglement and waviness on the mechanical behaviors of CNTR polymer nanocomposites

Invention of carbon nanotube (CNT) in the 1990s introduced a new class of materials whose extraordinary mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties seemed appealing enough to the research community to devote their time and effort for the purpose of analyzing composite materials reinforced by CNTs. Particularly, the marvelous stiffness of CNTs has made it possible to reach a high-modulus comp...

Research Progress of Organic polymer Composite Materials Modified by Carbon Nanotube

Carbon nanotube is a kind of the special structure of material. Its radial length is nano-level and axial length is micron order of magnitude. Both ends of this one-dimensional quantum tube are basically sealed. Several dozens of layers of coaxial pipe is made up of the hexagonal arrangement of carbon atoms. In this paper, the Organic polymer Composite Materials Modified by Carbon Nanotube is i...

Constitutive Modeling of Nanotube-Reinforced Polymer Composite Systems

In this study, a technique has been proposed for developing constitutive models for polymer composite systems reinforced with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). Since the polymer molecules are on the same size scale as the nanotubes, the interaction at the polymer/nanotube interface is highly dependent on the local molecular structure and bonding. At these small length scales, the lattice s...

Carbon nanotube composites

Carbon nanotubes are molecular-scale tubes of graphitic carbon with outstanding properties. They are among the stiffest and strongest fibres known, with Young’s moduli as high as 1 TPa and tensile strengths of up to 63 GPa. They also have remarkable electronic properties and can be metallic or semiconducting depending on their structure and diameter. There is currently great interest in exploit...
